There’s been the grapefruit diet, the cottage cheese diet and hundreds of ideas to help you lose unwanted pounds. Some are downright disgusting; some create unsustainable weight loss and some are just plain unsustainable – would you really do that, eat that, every single day. Here are 5 crazy diet ideas and what they really accomplish. Cosmopolitan Magazine asked Dr. Charlie Seltzer, a weight loss specialist, to weigh-in and he rated them from 1 (try it) to 10 (stay away)!
The Vision Diet. That’s right vision. This diet requires that you wear glasses with blue lens (although it doesn’t tell you where to find them). The idea is that red and yellow foods are the most appealing and by shading them blue, you’ll eat less. The doctor says no harm, no foul, but probably no results. If blue turns you off to a food, wear those shades for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But it rates a 10 for a really crazy idea.
The Eat Dessert at Breakfast Diet. This one’s a surprise because it’s actually based on research and may work. You eat a breakfast high in protein and carbs and add a sweet like a donut. The idea is that the extra protein and carbs hold hunger at bay and something sweet and yummy curbs your sweet tooth during the day. It can’t hurt to try and who doesn’t want a donuts in the morning? It’s a 1.
The Ice Diet. A liter of ice keeps the pounds away? No crunching; you let it dissolve in your mouth. The idea is that melting the ice burns calories. While being dehydrated can increase hunger and decrease your fat burning ability, it probably makes more sense to just drink more water. The doctor can’t find any associated results that melting ice in your mouth burns calories. He gives it an 8 – pretty crazy!
The Master Cleanse. Start the day with a glass of salt water and then throughout the day drink a concoction of lime or lemon, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water. End the day with a laxative tea YUCK! Cayenne pepper can speed up your metabolism. It sounds like torture and might be. The doctor rates this one as infinity out of 10 – beyond the scope of reason.
The Prayer Diet. The idea is that prayer will help you lose weight. The doctor says prayer can’t do any physical or metabolic harm and if it puts you in a mental state that makes it easier to make good, healthy food choices it might do some good. It’s a 5 out 10.
If this doesn’t prove that when you really want to lose weight, you’ll try almost anything – and we didn’t even mention the cabbage soup diet or the cotton ball diet (yep, you eat them). Our good advice is that if you really need to lose weight, get real help. Consider medical weight loss that will find a program, including fast weight loss programs, which will work for who you are and how you live. You’ll have the security of supervision by a weight loss doctor and the help of a supportive staff.
