In addition to regulating our body functions, proteins are used to build lean muscle. Lean muscle helps us to move around our daily lives but also helps to maintain a higher metabolic level. This is because muscle requires more energy to maintain than fat. Unfortunately, as we age our bodies begin to lose lean muscle mass which is why it is so important to eat right and exercise at a young age.
Sources of protein include lean meat. White meat such as chicken, fish, and turkey are excellent sources. Rather than frying these foods you can try to grill, steam, or bake dishes to reduce the amount of fats and oils.
Fiber - Fiber which are often plant based foods are difficult for our bodies to digest. It helps to push food through our digestive tract and keep the tract healthy. It has the added benefit of leaving you fuller for longer periods of time which helps to avoid snacking and overeating. By helping to regulate your digestion, fiber helps to regulate sugar levels which will improve your energy levels and prevent the sugar crashes.
There are many good sources of fiber. As previously mentioned, many plant based foods are high in fiber. Some excellent sources include vegetables, whole grains, and legumes like peas and beans.
Oatmeal is another excellent source of fiber which if eaten in the mornings helps to control your hunger feeling until it is time for lunch and helps to control your cholesterol. Oatmeal also provides complex carbohydrates instead of refined sugars often found in many breakfast cereals. These complex carbohydrates are more beneficial and are healthier for you. Most oatmeal is made with water but if made with skim milk you will receive the benefit of additional calcium which has been shown to help reduce tummy fat and assist in losing weight.
