You probably think that dieting is the best way to lose weight right? I used to think that way too. The television and media are full of it. Magazines and chat shows are forever discussing the next miracle cure to our weight problems. They had me totally convinced for eighteen years of my life. However when I finally researched 'tips on how to diet' I found out that scientific evidence shows dieting does not work. I was shocked.
As early as 1971 a scientific study questioned the effectiveness of dieting. It was highlighting the increasing social pressures upon people to lose weight and the consequential rise in the concept of dieting. Dieting has been around for hundreds of years. This study was looking at the sudden increase in people taking on dieting.
The study suggested that starving oneself to lose weight was not advisable and that making small changes in what an individual eats would give better results over the long term. Throughout the 1980's, 1990's and as recent as 2009 more scientific research concluded that diets create more problems that they actually solve.
These studies stated that dieting creates emotional eaters, people who binge and food addicts. None of these studies said anything positive about dieting. So evidence showing that diets don't work has been around as early as 1971. This evidence has been corroborated by countless other studies and yet we hear nothing about it.
Why have we not heard this news? Well think about it for one second. The diet industry is massive. It sells billions of dollars of products every month. If people heard and accepted this the diet industry would lose huge amounts of money. But why haven't the news reported it? Well the same people who own the news own the news papers and magazines in which the diet industry advertises. These people receive an enormous amount of advertising revenue from dieting products. It is totally not in their interests to let this scientific evidence become popular news.
What studies have shown is that eating for good health is a far better way to lose weight. So if you are looking for tips on how to diet I would suggest to eat for good health. Not only does eating for good health help you lose weight it is a far better long term solution. I would also strongly advise you to give up dieting.
A study in 2009 tested two groups of people. One group was on a traditional 'diet' and another group ate for good health. A year later the group who had eaten for good health had far better results. The fact they were focusing on good health meant they did not have to starve themselves. This made it far easier for that group to stick to their plan. The people 'dieting' felt restricted and only those with an iron will can endure this for any length of time.
As far as tips on how to diet go the evidence is clear that diets don't work. So why would you do it?
I am trying to create a shift in people attitudes to get away from the idea of dieting. So when they ask me for tips on how to diet this is what I always say.
"Based on the available evidence, here are my tips on how to diet. 1. Give up dieting. 2 Eat for good health. 3 Ignore all the diet industry scams. 4. Look for companies that offer long term solutions. 5. Enjoy your improved health!"
