For years the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has encouraged the low fat diet as a means to stay healthy. However, during this last decade, with the rise in popularity of the reduced carbohydrate diet plans, evidence is showing that the FDA may have been giving the wrong advice the whole time. Find out more in this article about how the FDA guidelines may have been causing you to gain weight.
As already mentioned, the FDA has been pushing the low fat diets as a means to stay healthy for decades. Numerous studies have been performed on low fat diets but the rise in popularity of low carb diets has forced the FDA to take a look at alternative diets as a means to stay healthy and reduce tummy fat.
You have seen the recent trends in low carbohydrate diets. They can be found everywhere and many fad diets are based on a low or no carbohydrate regimen. Some of these low carbohydrate diet plans which you may already be familiar are known as the Atkins diet, the high protein diet, South Beach diet, and the Hollywood diet.
Interestingly, the FDA currently has no guidelines on low or no carb diet plans. It would be embarrassing if the FDA has been giving wrong advice for decades. Surely, they would not come out and admit that their guidelines have in fact been making people unhealthier. Yet, is it coincidence that Americans have been gaining weight at a faster rate and becoming more obese since the FDA recommendations of the benefits of a low fat diet?
This leads to the question: Why would low fat foods in fact make us heavier?
Food is composed of mainly three molecules: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. In foods, where one of these molecules is reduced it often means that more of another has taken its place. Often low fat varieties of foods contain a higher amount of carbohydrates. Research has suggested that increasing the amount of carbohydrates causes your body to convert the extra energy to fat. This is the reason why low fat foods, which are high in carbs, have caused the increase in obesity rates.
Take a look at the labels the next time you go grocery shopping. Take notice on the ingredient substitutions that low fat foods contain. They often have a higher amount of carbohydrates.
While the FDA may have been the cause of so many Americans becoming obese in recent years it does not mean that you can’t be healthy. Eating a balanced diet with an increased amount of protein and fiber has been known to increase your metabolism which helps you to reduce tummy fat.
