The biggest struggle is in losing weight, maintaining it and then keeping it up.
In order to steer clear of this roller coaster ride and keep away all the emotional anxiety, ask yourself the following four sets of questions before you start off on another weight loss regime.
1. Why have you come back to this place in your life again? What didn't work for you the previous time? What went wrong with your earlier plans? Why is it that you lost motivation? What was so difficult about the last regime you took up? Before you answer these questions, be honest with yourself. This exercise is not to make you feel guilty but a chance for you to introspect and pinpoint those things that might have gone wrong. Lack of motivation and pure laziness are bad excuses. What then can you add to your routine that can make you feel energetic? What are parts of your previous program that caused you to lose motivation?
2. Will you be able to keep some time aside for your new goal this time around? You need to make some changes in your routine if you have to adopt a new lifestyle. Try to keep a journal with regular and honest food entries of everything you eat. This will help in identifying some patterns in food consumption. You need to do this in order to replace your old, unhealthy habits with new ones.
3. If again, you come across some roadblocks, how will you overcome them and remain motivated? What will get you back on track when things are difficult? Will getting rewards, getting feedback and ensure accountability help your goal? How can you devise a plan in order to stick to it?
4. Do you think you are ready to reach your goal by adopting some new techniques? Before you start out, you need to think a lot about the different situations and variables that could contribute to throwing you off path. Look out for a support group that could include friends or an online help group.
The key to the weight loss game is to introspect thoroughly before you start out on it. Look out for various triggers that have led to snacking and overeating in your schedule and try eliminating them. Talk to family and friends and look at various methods of weight loss that have been tried and tested in the scientific world. Keep a record of what you eat everyday in a diary or a journal. This is a great trick for you to identify patterns and tendencies in yourself where you tend to eat a lot and make hasty decisions with respect to food that you almost always tend to regret.
