The world is going gaga over Acai berries and calling them the new 'super-food'. In fact, over a dozen articles in medical literature have talked about the health benefits of Acai berries. Unless you have been living under some rock, you would have heard about these wonder berries.
What is Acai?
The purple berry known as Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-yee) comes from a palm tree that is specifically found in Amazon rainforests. The tree grows over 15 meters and produces Acai berries which are small and dark purple. We may be new to health benefits of Acai berry (they are more than just weight loss) but Brazilian natives have been using the healing properties of Acai Berry since thousands of years and regular consumption of Acai is known to bolster energy. Due to their high nutritional value, these berries are also used to treat various diseases and aid quick recovery. The Acai Berry is known to have sustained the natives of Amazon during famine.
The Brazilians have nicknamed it as 'Beauty Berry' as the compounds found within Acai are known to make skin feel better, both from inside and outside. The combination of amino acids, antioxidants and omega fatty acids boost immune system and metabolism and also slow down ageing process.
What's good about it?
Everything! Yes, everything about Acai is good and indigenous African tribes are living proof of that. It would be interesting to know that only a little Acai berry has more proteins than an egg. Furthermore, if you combine it with a host of omega fatty acids you will be thanking Acai for your improved look and texture of your skin, nails and hair. The vitamins and minerals that are found in different fruits can be found in Acai alone along with a wide range of unique chemical compounds which cannot be found in any other fruit.
These berries are packed with powerful antioxidants which fight harmful molecules or free radicals as they are more commonly known. The deep purple color of Acai Berry is responsible for its antioxidant properties which are quite similar to the ones found in darker berries like blackberries or blueberries. The Acai berries also have anti-inflammatory properties.
