A shocking statistic has recently emerged;
more than half of the American population consumes food that is very high in calories
and yet very low in nutrition. As a person who is concerned about women's health,
this is something that should concern you greatly especially when it come to the main food groups
- proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats and fiber. For many of us proteins,
carbohydrates and vitamins (and even fiber) are not a problem -
they make it onto our plates one way or the other because they are rather common and they are also encouraged.
Fats are another story altogether.
For decades now science had encouraged us to think that fats are harmful.
Doctors and researchers insisted that in order to be healthy one had to remove
as much fat as possible from their food.
In came the low-fat everything - low fat milk, low fat cheese, low fat meat,
low-fat snacks -
anything for which taste could be altered just a bit was renamed low-fat and we all went along,
depriving our bodies of a much needed component of the diet.
What the "experts" failed to mention was that there are two kinds of fats,
good and bad. By stripping your diet of all fat you are actually harming your health.
Your body needs fats to function at the cellular level.
As a matter of fact, people who consume 100% fat-free diets can easily die.
The body becomes so starved of this important nutrient that
it ends up stripping the most important fat in the body,
the one that lines your main organs such as your liver and your heart.
Once they are exposed even the minimum amount of damage can lead to organ failure.
So what are the good fats?
The first thing that you should take into account when deciding the kinds of fats
that you want is consume is your weight.
If you are not trying to lose a significant amount of weight then a low fat diet is completely unnecessary
- you will be better served by eating healthy foods and exercising in the long term.
If you are looking to lose more than a few pounds of weight there are certain foods
that are better for you than others because they contain healthy amounts of fat.
You are better off, for instance, eating cereals rather than white bread,
biscuits, cake, sugary puddings and desserts.
When it comes to fruits, vegetables and nuts you can do well
with almost anything but remember that potatoes fall in this group.
They are good for you except when they are fried
in which case they are high in both fats and sodium.
All white meat is good so you can eat all kinds of white fish and chicken.
When it comes to other meats
you are okay eating all kinds so long as you trim off excess fat
and you cook it in a healthy manner (avoid deep fried meats of all kinds).
Lastly, you cannot leave out exercise in women's health.
Make time a few hours a week to work up a sweat and get your heart racing through a workout.
