Question: Is it better to do cardio before or after weightlifting?
(from reader Anthony Aguilera)
Answer: Don’t blow your load on the treadmill, says Mike Boyle, A.T.C., owner of Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning in Woburn, Massachusetts. When weight loss is your goal, hit the weight room first: Most people avoid lower-body work after they’ve done some type of conditioning because their legs are already tired, he says. Your legs contain some of the largest muscle groups in your body, so building strength in your lower body is essential for boosting your metabolism. “Get in a good total body strength workout and then finish with some interval training, even if it’s only alternating walking on an incline and flat,” Boyle adds.
