Looking to cut back on calories? Foods with strong aromas may help you eat less.
In a recent study, a custard-like dessert was pumped into the subjects’ mouths while "vanilla-custard" smells were simultaneously delivered directly into the back of their noses. The 10 subjects underwent over 30 taste trials, and were able to control the size of each bite with a push of a button.
The results, which were published in the journal Flavor: The more intense the aroma was, the smaller the bite. People ate about 5 to 10 percent less food overall when the stronger aroma was present.

Why? When the nose is presented with an intense smell, we instinctively take smaller bites to avoid strong sensations, says René A de Wijk, lead study author and a sensory scientist in the Netherlands. So make sure to take in a big whiff before chowing down.
