Need to find the drive to get fit after the age of 40? John Nix, a Texas real-estate agent and avid runner, found his greatest inspiration after recently finishing second at a local 5K race. "When I brought home the trophy my son, who's 5, saw it and said, 'I'm gonna run with you. I want a trophy, too!' There's the motivation right there. You want to be there for your kids – to be able the play the sports they're interested in with them. I want that long-term longevity. I want to be around for a while."
Of course, exercise wasn't always a top priority for John. After a job-relocation to Mexico, working longer hours meant cutting back on workout time. So did getting married. Then having small kids. In short...life. John, 42, realizes now it's never too late to hit it hard again. "Why not, right? I feel like I can be at my peak of fitness."
For him, the whole Transform program is about making a lifestyle choice. The earliest take-away John's had from Craig Ballantyne, C.S.C.S., is in meal preparation. Under his guidelines, looking ahead means making better choices. "If you don't spend time planning what you're going to eat," says John, "then you're choosing from a random grab-bag of whatever you can get a hold of. And that's never good."
In the short-term, John has some very specific goals: to run a 10K in under 60 minutes. Long term, he wants to get that time under 45 minutes. Better yet, he's confident the Transform program will give his training the kickstart it's sorely needed. "The extra guidance should put into focus what I need to do, when and how I should be eating, and generally give me more structure. I’m excited to see the results."
