Two well-balanced "dinners" available now, at your local vending machine. We're not suggesting you make a habit of planning your meals around the nearest vending machine. But if you should ever find yourself stuck in a Des Moines motel with $2.80 in change (long story, don't ask), you can still treat yourself to an acceptable supper from the lobby machines. "To create a nutritionally complete meal, the average man needs 90 to 120 grams of carbohydrates, 17 to 22 grams of protein, and 17 to 22 grams of fat," says Leslie Bonci, R.D., spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.
"If you make the right selections, vending- machine foods can provide the energy of a complete meal." Bonci gave us two menus, each of which adds up to a meal-worthy 600 to 800 calories. One more thing: Pass on the machine root beer, and go with the Des Moines water. Anybody have change for a buck?
