Belly Off: Weight Loss Success Story

Meet Matt DeissWeight Before: 279 lb After: 190 lb Job: Real-estate salesman/high-school basketball coach Home: Fairfield, Ohio Age 31 Height 6'3''The GainDeiss lettered in basketball in high school, but in college switched from playing to watching. He became a bar rat, living on a burgers-and-ice-cream diet. He drank "obnoxious amounts" of soda. The extra weight discouraged him in his few attempts at exercise. By age 28, he weighed 279 pounds. The ChangeA friend who'd never known the slim, athletic Matt told him, "You're in the worst shape of any of my friends." Ouch. "The truth hurts," says Deiss, whose competitive side re-emerged. He made a weight-loss bet with a buddy and went to the gym at off-hours, wearing baggy sweats. He worked out for 20 minutes daily on either an elliptical trainer or a stairclimber and he lifted weights. He ate six small meals a day, with no portion bigger than his fist. The ResultsDeiss dropped 100 pounds in 6 months, which put him at his playing weight of 179. He gained muscle by weight lifting and stabilized at 190 pounds and 9 percent body fat. His waist size went from 42 to 30. The small meals satisfy him and have eliminated his cravings. The RewardHe's back on the basketball court, coaching the freshman team at his old high school. "I don't think I would've been able to gain respect from the kids at my old weight," says Deiss. He's resumed playing pickup games himself.Deiss's WorkoutHigh-intensity cardiovascular training for 20 minutes daily on various machines. He does 300 abdominal crunches daily while hanging from a chinup bar. He lifts weights 5 days a week, focusing on upper-body moves 3 days a week and lower-body twice weekly. When he plays golf, he walks.Deiss's Tips<*>Try new foods. "I'm a salmon lover now, and I never would have thought I'd like it." <*>Start off slowly and stay with it. "If you think you're going to start this drastic diet and then run 5 miles a day, you're only going to burn out." <*>Get a friend to take on the weight-loss challenge with you. "I have the attitude that 'I can't quit because he's not going to.' " Advertisement Advertisement Daily Dose
