How to Use a Sauna

Preparing the sauna.

1. Cleanse your body thoroughly. This helps remove any dirt or oil that could clog your skin. Avoid wearing any oil or lotion that may block your pores.

2. Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is essential for sweating. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna session.

3. Remove any metal objects. Metal objects can get extremely hot in a sauna, so it's important to remove any jewelry or other metal items you may be wearing before entering.

4. Wear appropriate clothing. While it is customary to use a sauna naked in many cultures, you can wear a bathing suit or towel if you prefer. Just make sure your clothing is made from a natural material that allows your skin to breathe.

5. Adjust the temperature and humidity if possible. Most saunas have a thermostat that allows you to control the temperature, and some also have a humidity control. The ideal temperature for a sauna is between 150 and 175 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity should be around 10 to 20 percent.

6. Enter the sauna. Once you've prepared yourself and the sauna, you can enter. Sit or lie down on the benches, making sure your entire body is exposed to the heat.

7. Relax. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Let the heat penetrate your body, and let your muscles relax.

Using the sauna.

* Stay in the sauna for no longer than 15-20 minutes. If you start to feel uncomfortable, light-headed, or dizzy, get out immediately.

* Take a cold shower or plunge into a cool pool after each sauna session. This helps your body cool down and prevents overheating.

* Do not use the sauna more than once a day. Give your body time to recover between sauna sessions.
