Progression: What to Know

What is progression?

Progression is a series of consecutive events or actions advancing to an end or higher level. In music, progression refers to the movement from one chord to another, often following a specific pattern or formula. Chord progressions create the harmonic framework of a song and play a crucial role in shaping its overall mood and feel.

Common Chord Progressions:

1. I - IV - V - I: This is one of the most fundamental and widely used chord progressions. It creates a sense of stability, resolution, and forward movement.

2. I - vi - IV - V: Sometimes referred to as the "circle of fifths" progression, this sequence adds more harmonic depth and tension before resolving back to the tonic chord.

3. I - vi - ii - V: This progression often creates a sense of anticipation or buildup before resolving to the tonic chord.

4. ii - V - I: Known as the "authentic" or "perfect" cadence, this progression strongly suggests resolution or a sense of closure.

5. V - I: This is a common closing progression, providing a strong resolution to the tonic chord.

Secondary Dominants:

Secondary dominants are chords that temporarily act as dominant chords (usually V) to lead to another chord. Their use can add melodic and harmonic complexity to a chord progression.

Function-Based Analysis:

Chord progressions can also be analyzed based on their function within the tonal system:

1. Tonic (T): Rests or establishes a sense of "home."

2. Subdominant (SD): Creates a feeling of motion and leads toward the dominant.

3. Dominant (D): Provides a strong sense of direction, pulling toward resolution.

Understanding and utilizing chord progressions is essential in music composition and songwriting. By mastering these harmonic building blocks, musicians can create memorable and captivating melodies and harmonies.
