Want to learn to lose weight? Congratulations - most people just jump on the latest diet bandwagon when they want to lose weight, without putting much thought into it.
Then they're crushed and disheartened when they inevitably fall off the diet a few weeks (or days) later. But if you take some time and put some thought into it, you're more assured of weight loss success - especially over the long term.
Think about this - nobody builds a house without first sitting down and calculating the cost, thinking about what design they want, how many rooms, etc. Why then do we just jump into a diet or grab the latest diet pill?
That method is doomed to fail. If you want true, lasting weight loss success, take some time to learn the fundamentals of weight loss.
This article will outline 3 key fundamentals that I learned on my weight loss journey. Hopefully they can help you!
#1 Choose a Diet You Can Live With
Ok, so we know we can't eat chocolate bars and gummy bears and lose weight. But there are so many diets available on the market today, you're sure to find one that goes well with your lifestyle.
You want a diet you can live with - one that is as enjoyable and as stress-free as possible, one that will upset your life as little as possible.
So for example, maybe you can't live without your nightly glass of wine - there are diets that allow for that. You may be a total chocolate addict - there are diets for that too.
Maybe you just don't want to be bothered shopping and cooking all that special diet food - then try a diet food delivery service. They're affordable and deliver delicious meals to your door. Easy.
Maybe you don't have time for weekly weigh-ins - but still want that buddy-support. There are some great online programs that have full weight loss communities, message boards and online chats with dietitians.
Bottom Line? You are the most important factor in your weight loss success - so make sure you sit down and really think about what you need in a weight loss plan before starting a diet.
#2 Learn About Portion Control
If you want to learn to lose weight and keep it off, you'll have to master an unpracticed skill - portion control. That does not mean you have to starve yourself. It means eating healthy-sized portions on a consistent basis.
Unfortunately we have no clue what a healthy portion size is today. With just one average restaurant meal being about twice the total daily calories a woman needs, our portion-control sense is definitely out of whack.
Try cutting your portions in half and then see if you're still hungry. Chances are you won't be - and if you take the time to really enjoy your first half portion, chances are you won't miss the second!
#3 Build Movement Into Your Life
Studies of people who have lost weight and kept it off consistently show that the vast majority of these people build some type of exercise into their lives.
You don't have to slave away hours in the gym. It's your life and you want to enjoy it right? So choose an activity you like and try it.
Maybe that's bicycling along the trails behind your home. It could be mall walking with your local mall-walking group. Why not try something fun and adventurous like rock-climbing or rollerblading?
Whatever you choose to do, building a foundation of exercise will help you keep the weight off (and tone up those trouble spots too!).
So those are 3 key tips when learning to lose weight. Don't worry, it's not hard. You can do it! Just take your time and plan out your journey. That way you're more likely to get to your slim body destination - and even enjoy the journey!
