Shedding weight is only half the challenge. The other half of your challenge is keeping the weight off. At times when we notice that we have lost weight then there is a little voice inside that says that there is now slightly more room to gobble down more! So we find ourselves back at the starting point. Here are some guidelines for how to lose pounds and keep it off.
We tend to hang on until our next dinner before we have anything substantial, which can also encourage snacking. If you eat many small meals instead of just 3 big ones then you will lose weight easier as your metabolism has to work to process the food and you are giving your body fuel that it can use up during the course of the day as it needs it.
A lot of us think the aim of eating is to empty the plate, that is great if you put a reasonable amount on there. But if you put more on there than your body needs you are just going to be clogging your body up. Take the time to eat slower so you can pay attention to your body and see when it feels full. Also make sure you always leave at least 1 thing on your plate, this will break the habit of having to eat everything so you don't feel guilty when you are full.
We all explain away our behavior so that we can rationalize what we do. The same goes for cleaning the plate, we realize that we are privileged to live in a society where food is abundant and we feel guilty therefore to leave any. If you have that attitude then how about this, put less on the plate! Then it doesn't matter if you finish everything or not. Stop building skyscrapers of food on your plate and just have a nice amount, you will be surprised what a reasonable sized meal looks like.
Once you start to eat less you find that your crave less, but you are just as happy with the meal amount. You won't starve by cutting down your meal sizes, it may take a while for your body and mind to adjust, but it will and then it will be much happier that you don't overload it and so will you.
Keep bad food away - the enticement of seeing vanilla cakes, sweets, McDonald's, and other high fat foods are the reason why most dieters fall victim to unhealthy eating, and thus can't lose weight. In order to lose fat you have to remove the everyday temptations that come at you.
Case in point, if you know that TV ads are your vice, don't look at them. If you have a buddy or family member who likes to eat pizza, leave the dining area when they are eating. You will only be torturing yourself into inevitable failure by sitting there and watching your family member eat a lovely hot pizza. You have to be strong and leave the difficult situation.
Changing your lifestyle is harder than you think, but once you have lose the weight and kept it off for a few months, then these guidelines above become second nature and you will find it much easier to keep your weight stable. Put in the effort at the start and it will be well worth it when the new slim you looks in the mirror each morning.
