I have been on diets for 45 years and I have noticed that there is a common recommendation. All diets suggest drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day. Now water is not one of my favorite cravings. I did not realize water's importance to weight loss until recently. If all diets recommend drinking that much water, quite evidently it must be important. Some questions that you may be asking include:
How much water do I really need?
Why water anyway?
How do you drink that much water?
How Much Water?: Most food and nutrition panels recommend that a woman should consume 96 ounces and a man 125 ounces of water per day. Our bodies receive some of this needed water by eating water rich foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. The bulk of the daily requirement should be met by drinking cool sparkling clear water. It is a generally accepted that you should drink 64 ounces each day to facilitate weight loss and maintain proper hydration.
Why Water?: Water is important for several reasons: hydration, proper metabolism and toxin removal.
Hydration: When most people start a diet and or exercise program (always consult your Doctor) there is an initial weight loss due to the loss of water. This initial loss needs to be replaced for our bodies to function properly. While dieting and exercising, we can dehydrate easily. Proper hydration is important because of muscle fatigue and non optimized metabolism. When dehydrated there is a loss of blood volume and our muscles do not get enough oxygen causing us to feel tired. Dehydration can be serious, so drinking your water (64 ounces/day and more if exercising) is a must.
Proper Metabolism: is critical to losing weight. When dehydrated, our bodies do not metabolize fat as efficiently as when we are hydrated. Therefore, to break down stored fat, burn it and remove the toxic waste at maximum efficiency, we need to drink plenty of water.
Toxin Removal: Our metabolism burns fat and creates waste. This waste is toxic and needs to be flushed from our system. Water makes this happen. By consuming water and flushing the toxins from our bodies we are hydrated, cleansed and able to function at our best.
How Do We Drink That Much Water?: Here are several tips I can recommended:
First: Drink an 8 oz glass of water before each meal. This will aid with digestion and help give you a sense of fullness before you start eating.
Second: Each time you drink your water, be sure and enter it in your "Food and Exercise Journal" available at my website listed below. This will enable you to keep track of the amount of water you have consumed for the day and how much more you need.
Third: Carry a small bottle of water with you throughout the day. Take a drink each time you think about it. Before long and without realizing, the entire bottle will be gone. Simply refill it each time it is empty and keep track of the number of bottles you drink.
Fourth: If drinking plain water just doesn't appeal to you, add calorie free cool aid or a citrus wedge to flavor it to your liking. If you like the taste, you will find it easier to drink 64 ounces.
As a bonus, eat water rich fresh fruits and vegetables. You may also consider clear water based soups but watch out for soups that are creamy. These water rich foods also help to keep you hydrated.
Water is a key ingredient to dieting and is essential to good health. If you become thirsty, you are dehydrated and you need to drink! Drinking water and staying hydrated is necessary for good health and maintaining an optimized fat burning metabolism.
