The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet is the brainchild of doctors Richard and Rachael Heller. They wrote a book called the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet which is a very popular best seller worldwide and still continues to sell. There have been several updated versions published.

Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet was brought about due to the fact that so many people are over because of their addiction to, or ignorance about carbohydrates. Most people do not seem to realize that there are good and bad carbohydrates and just how much effect carbs can have on our health and . The result of eating too many carbohydrate rich foods is the insulin spikes that frequently occur. This can lead to dependence on carb rich foods leading to an even great consumption of these foods in a cycle that is difficult to break.

 

The idea of the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet is not to count calories. It is about learning how your body reacts to some foods rather than focusing on fat or calorie content. It also includes a special reward meal each day which is the best way for people not to become discouraged. Moderation is the key of the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet rather than elimination. The reward meal can include non-starch vegetables, meat, eggs and carbs as well as dessert.

The regular meals can only include protein and vegetables and no carbohydrates are allowed. Hence this is not a no-carb diet (which can be highly dangerous and unhealthy) but a low carb diet with a realistic expectation that carbohydrates will and should still be consumed, just in moderation.

Low fat diets generally lead people to eat too many carbohydrates. Due to sedentary lifestyles people are likely to actually gain very quickly from these types of diets. This can be depressing and confusing if people are not aware of the negative effect of carbohydrates in their foods. Due to the imbalanced insulin levels there is an increased food craving all day long. This does not occur once carbohydrates start being eaten in moderation.

There is a 2 week initial phase in the beginning stages of the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet. After that the path you take will depend on your goals.
