Teenage Weight Loss - 3 Important Tips

The important thing to remember about teen weight loss is to have much healthier eating habits. Presently teen obesity is an increasingly serious epidemic, but there are things you can implement as a parent to help your teenager with any weight problems he or she may have.

Although there is no magic formula to helping your teenager lose weight, the most important strategy to succeeding is by helping them to lead a healthier kind of life that they can then carry on into adulthood. Below are a few tips that parents can use when dealing with their overweight teens.

1. Don't use quick fixes to lose weight rapidly.

Help your teenager by teaching them how to lose weight, and keep it off. Many of the fad diets out there are most likely to cheat your teenager of essential vitamins, iron and calcium that they need in their diet, as they are still growing. Don't allow them to take weight loss pills or engage in other quick remedies, as they will not treat the root of the problem, and the effects of these kinds of treatments are short lived. It is important to remember that only lasting changes in their daily lifestyle will keep the weight off.

2. Increase the level of physical activity your teen performs. Just like any adult, a teenager needs to perform about 60 minutes of physical activity each day. But this does not mean that they have to do it all at once. They can, instead do the activity in increments during the day in order to help burn off any excess calories or fat. Team sports, which they do at school or at a local sports hall, is an incredible way for your teenager to get active. If your child isn't an athlete, or realizes it to be too difficult to participate in specific activities, then encourage them to walk, cycle or skate to and from school, or just to walk several laps around the school before they begin classes. Why not suggest that they spend at least one of each day away from the computer and do something a little more physical (may be you can get them to take the dog for a walk)? Try and get them to do some household jobs, like mowing or washing the car, as they have aerobic benefits also.

3. Ensure that your teen eats a well-balanced breakfast. If you have a teenager who discovers that it's too hard to get up, try to wake them up a a little earlier than normal in order for them to eat breakfast. Have you heard people say breakfast is the most important meal of the day"? A nutritious breakfast will help jump start their day, boost their metabolism, and will give them with the energy they need to make it through the day. Also, you may discover that it stops them from eating too much during the remainder of the day.

If your teenager is not keen on high fiber cereal or whole wheat toast, then suggest they eat what was left over from the night before. You could even recommend a piece of cheese, a small handful of nuts and a piece of fruit instead, as this will be just as good for them, and will do the same job as the cereal or toast does.
