Vitamin What Are Plant

Vitamins are organic molecules (or a set of closely related molecules called vitamers) that an organism needs in small quantities for proper metabolic function. Essential nutrients cannot be synthesized in the organism in sufficient quantities (or at all), and therefore must be obtained through the diet. For example, Vitamin C can be synthesized by some species but not by others; it is not considered a vitamin in the first instance but is in the second. Most vitamins are not single molecules, but groups of related molecules called vitamers. For example, there are eight vitamers of vitamin E: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols.

All vitamins are considered organic compounds (carbon-containing compounds), although not all organic compounds are vitamins. The term vitamin does not include minerals or other micronutrients such as essential fatty acids, although historically some vitamins (such as vitamin C) have been called "accessory factors" to minerals.

Vitamins are classified into two groups: water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins are easily absorbed and transported throughout the body, and they do not need to be stored in fat tissue. Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed along with dietary fats, and they can be stored in fat tissue.

The following is a list of the 13 essential vitamins for humans:

* Vitamin A (retinol)

* Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

* Vitamin D (cholecalciferol)

* Vitamin E (tocopherol)

* Vitamin K (phylloquinone)

* Thiamine (vitamin B1)
