POTS and Migraine: What’s the Link and How to Manage?

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and migraines are two conditions that often coexist. POTS is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system that causes an increase in heart rate and a drop in blood pressure when a person stands up. Migraines are severe headaches that are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

The link between POTS and migraines is not fully understood, but there are several theories. One theory is that both conditions are caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the body's "fight or flight" response, and it can be triggered by stress, anxiety, or certain medical conditions. When the sympathetic nervous system is overactive, it can cause an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating. These symptoms can also be present in migraines.

Another theory is that POTS and migraines are both caused by a dysfunction in the brainstem. The brainstem is a part of the brain that controls many of the body's autonomic functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion. A dysfunction in the brainstem can lead to both POTS and migraines.

There are several ways to manage POTS and migraines. Some of the most common treatments include:

* Lifestyle changes: Avoiding triggers such as stress, anxiety, and certain foods can help to reduce the frequency and severity of POTS and migraines. Eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep can also help to improve symptoms.

* Medications: A variety of medications can be used to treat POTS and migraines, including beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and triptans.

* Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help to improve balance and coordination, which can reduce the risk of falls in people with POTS.

If you have POTS and migraines, it is important to see a doctor to discuss treatment options. With proper management, both conditions can be controlled.
