Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery stools that occur frequently. Other symptoms may include:
* Abdominal pain or cramps
* Nausea and vomiting
* Fever
* Fatigue
* Headache
* Muscle aches
Causes
Diarrhea can have many causes, including:
* Infection: Viruses, bacteria, and parasites can all cause diarrhea.
* Food intolerance or sensitivity: Some people may experience diarrhea after eating certain foods, such as dairy products, gluten, or spicy foods.
* Medications: Certain medications, such as antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and laxatives, can cause diarrhea.
* Medical conditions: Diarrhea can be a symptom of other medical conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and celiac disease.
Treatment
Treatment for diarrhea will depend on the cause. If the diarrhea is mild and does not cause dehydration, it may not require any treatment and will usually resolve on its own within a few days. For more severe diarrhea, treatment may include:
* Oral rehydration solution: This can help to replace fluids and electrolytes that are lost through diarrhea.
* Antidiarrheal medications: These medications can help to slow down the passage of stool through the intestines.
* Antibiotics: These may be necessary if the diarrhea is caused by a bacterial infection.
Prevention
Diarrhea can often be prevented by practicing good hygiene and sanitation, such as:
* Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating.
* Avoiding contaminated food and water.
* Getting vaccinated against rotavirus and norovirus.
* Avoiding close contact with people who are sick with diarrhea.
When to see a doctor
You should see a doctor if your diarrhea is severe or does not improve within a few days. You should also see a doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:
* Fever of 102°F or higher
* Bloody or black stools
* Severe dehydration (signs of dehydration may include dry mouth, decreased urination, and dizziness)
* Persistent vomiting
* Abdominal pain that is severe
* Diarrhea that lasts for more than 2 weeks
