- Histamine, a chemical released during the body's inflammatory response, is one of the main culprits behind scab itching. When your skin sustains an injury, your body sends white blood cells to the site to fight off infection and initiate the healing process. These cells release histamine, which causes blood vessels to dilate and become leaky, leading to increased blood flow and the release of more immune cells. As histamine accumulates in the area, it binds to receptors in the nerve cells and sends signals to your brain that are perceived as itching.
Dryness
- Scabs are essentially dried, crusty layers of blood and other bodily fluids that form over a wound to protect it from further damage and infection. As these scabs dry out, they can become hard, tight, and uncomfortable on your delicate skin. This dryness creates a barrier that blocks your skin from receiving the necessary moisture it needs, making the area underneath the scab feel itchy and irritated.
Healing process
- As the wound beneath the scab heals and new skin forms, the body produces new skin cells that push up and grow. This process, called epithelialization, can cause tension and itching as the skin stretches and expands. The underlying tissue might also be growing and changing, further adding to the discomfort and itching.
Immune response
- The immune response during the healing process can trigger the production of certain chemicals, such as cytokines, that activate the nerves in your skin. These nerve fibers transmit itch signals to your brain, resulting in the sensation of itching around or under the scab.
