How to Avoid in Your (and Popcorn)

Here are some tips to help you avoid getting too much salt in your popcorn (and yourself):

  1. Skip the pre-packaged varieties. While these can be convenient, they're often more heavily salted than homemade popcorn.
  2. Use less butter or oil. Fats like butter and oil help salt stick to popcorn, so using less of them will result in less salt. For a healthier alternative, try air-popped popcorn.
  3. Add your salt after popping. Salting your popcorn after popping will allow you to control the amount of salt you're consuming. Aim for no more than 1/4 teaspoon of salt per 6 cups of popcorn.
  4. Use a sea salt or a salt blend. Sea salt typically has larger crystals that will help you to use less. You can also experiment with different types of flavored salt blends to add a little bit of variety to your popcorn without overdoing it on the salt.
  5. Be mindful of other salty snacks. If you're having a lot of other salty foods in your diet, it may be easier to go overboard on your popcorn. Try to limit the number of salty snacks you're consuming each day.

By following these tips, you can enjoy popcorn without worrying about taking in too much salt.
