What Is a Dream Feed for Babies?

Dream feeding means feeding your baby while your baby is still sleeping.

- The term "dream feed" is used because many babies have a "dream feed" in the early morning hours without fully waking up.

Why to Dream Feed:

- Dream feeds can assist with weaning your baby off middle of the night feedings and help get your baby sleeping longer at night.

- Dream feeds also help support proper weight gain, especially for babies who aren’t great eaters during the day.

When to Dream Feed:

- Around 10-12 weeks when your baby is able to drink at least 4-5 ounces of milk at night without waking up.

- A good time is usually 3-4 hours after your baby’s last feeding.

- The key to dream feeding is that your baby is sleepy and doesn't wake up during the feeding (or wakes up just enough to eat.)

How to Dream Feed:

1. Preparation:

- Gather all the feeding supplies (bottle or breast, food, swaddles) within reach

- Consider dimming the lights and turning off screens to keep the environment calm and dark.

- Wash and dry your hands.

2. Wake Your Baby:

- Gently wake your baby just enough to feed them.

- You can do this by stroking their cheek, patting their bottom or gently calling their name.

3. Positioning:

- Prop up your baby with pillows or position yourself in such a way that your baby is comfortable.

- Support your baby’s head with your hand and position their head slightly higher than the rest of their body.

4. Feeding:

- If you are breastfeeding, bring your baby to the breast and let them latch

- If you are bottle feeding, slowly insert the nipple into your baby's mouth

5. Burping:

- During or after the feeding, burp your baby by holding them upright against your shoulder and gently patting or rubbing their back.

- A burp cloth or fresh diaper can be placed over their shoulder to catch any spills

6. Put Baby back to Sleep:

- After feeding, gently remove the bottle or breast from your baby's mouth and place them back in their crib or bed.

- You can try swaddling your baby tightly or using a sleep sack to help them feel secure and comfortable.

Troubleshooting Dream Feeding:

- If your baby wakes up during a dream feed, try to keep the interaction calm and quiet, and focus on feeding your baby.

- If your baby resists the feeding, don’t force it. Try again the next night.

- Some babies may require a longer stretch of sleep before they're ready for a dream feed.

- If you're having trouble getting your baby back to sleep after a dream feed, try shushing, patting, or rocking them until they drift back to sleep.

Note: Dream feeding may not work for all babies, and it's important to do what's best for your family and baby. If you have any concerns about dream feeding, talk to your baby's doctor.
