QuestionHi, I am beginning to think that there is some sort of missing link. Maybe there is something wrong with me. I really can't lose weight. I need to lose about 15-20 pounds. I have lost about 20 pounds over the last three years but in the last 8 months or so have been unable to budge. I am very active, eat low sugar, low fat, low carb and only brown carb when I do eat carbs. I have had my thyroid tested and it's fine. I feel like there has to be an explanation for my problem, perhaps something that will just click! Please help!
AnswerJill,
More than likely, your body is simply adjusted to how you're eating. Also, as people do low-carb for a long time, they tend to gradually cut fat in an attempt to cut calories. When you eat too little fat, then you prevent your metabolism from burning fat-you throw yourself into fat-storage mode.
Here's what I suggest:
First, begin taking an essential fatty acid supplement (fish oil capsules). They're dirt cheap and very helpful.
Second, for two to three weeks, eat a diet of 10% protein, 10% fat, and 80% carbs (including lots of bad 'white' carbs, fruit juice, etc). You will be very hungry, so watch your calories. Don't go over 2,000 calories per day whatever you do.
After this two week period, go on a classic Atkins induction. Eat no more than 20 grams of carbs per day, in the form of green vegetables and full-fat dairy. Do not eat ANY grains, beans, or nuts, and concentrate on eating a very fatty diet. Do this for two to three weeks.
Doing these two rotations should give your metabolism a wake-up call and help you start seeing weight loss again.
Good luck!
