Questionmy 4 in a half year old daughter had an 24 hr kidney stone test done and it came back that she has two crystals which are oxalic acid and uric acid .and now we are waiting for an appointment .so my question is while waiting for this appointment what are some things i can do at home as far as changing her food diet to help her out?
AnswerThe nutrients most commonly restricted after the discovery of kidney stones are salt, calcium, oxalate, and protein. Since you did not mention calcium (and since all kidney stones are different) restricting calcium may not be necessary; you should speak with the doctor when you go to her appointment. Until your daughter's appointment, you should limit her intake of tea, chocolate, peanut products, beans and tofu, berries, grapes, oranges and orange juice, grapefruit and grapefruit juice, green leafy vegetables, and potatoes (including sweet potatoes). You can also limit meat to 4-6 ounces per day and milk/cheese to 3 servings per day. You will also want to get her to drink as much fluid as you can get her to drink. Once someone gets kidney stones, they are likely to have them again. Drinking plenty of water will help reduce the risk, as well as continuing to limit those same foods. Studies have shown drinking lemonade or flavored water with a dash of lemon juice (both made from real lemons) may help reduce the risk. Newer studies have shown diet sodas containing citrate and malate (such as Diet Sunkist Orange and Diet 7-UP) may also help reduce the risk of kidney stones, but I wouldn't recommend anyone drink large amounts of diet soda for any reason.
I hope the information helps. Four years old is so young to be dealing with such a painful problem! I wish you both the best of luck now and in the future.
