QuestionAmirah I hope you can help.
I dont have diabetes but my doctor says I have the symptoms of pre-diabetes. I have been mostly meat free since Xmas. Will this new diet help or will the extra carbs worsen the symptoms?
My IBS has improved but now I get nausea in the morning, maybe from a carb meal before bed meal? Googling this I get 'low blood sugar' as a possible cause. When I used to snack on meat before bed I was OK. I wish I didnt have to eat at all but I have an evening job with no chance to snack-I drive a bus 8 hours straight cant eat and drive. I have tried fruit or yogurt but I'm a guy and a big one too.
Thanks for your thoughts!
AnswerHi Baruch!
Congratulations on your commitment to healthier living!! It's not the easiest thing to do, but despite all of that you've put your best foot forward and are doing it!!
So, it sounds like you haven't yet made the transition mentally. Transitioning from a plant to meat-based diets requires that you make at least 90% of the transition mentally. As such, mentally is where you must start. Your mind and body have been conditioned to eat meat and over a long period of time. Both have convinced you that meat is a food that you need versus want. Thus, it will take time to change your thinking and feeling around this issue. Just take it one day at a time.
As for carbs, I would suggest not starting a plant-based diet primarily on carbs. I'm assuming that you're eating a lot of pasta dishes. This is something that you want to indulge in occasionally as it will lead to more weight gain. Focus on eating more whole, fresh foods like fruits and vegetables. Snack on dried fruits, nuts and seeds if you need something to munch on between meals. Also, eating a hardy breakfast like oatmeal in the morning should get you off to a good start. Oatmeal is loaded with nutrients and those nutrients will get you through the day.
Essentially, you'll need to make it a point to eat more nutrient dense foods, which are primarily uncooked fruits and vegetables. Cabbage, spinach, kale and other leafy green vegetables are a good source of nutrients. Apples, grapes and bananas are packed with nutrients as well. Load up on those foods and you'll realize weight loss quickly and naturally. Besides that your body will be getting the nutrients and vitamins that it needs to function so you should have more energy to get through those 8-hour days.
I hope this helps and keep working at this and I promise you the benefits will be more than fabulous as will the new YOU staring back at you in the mirror!!
Warmest regards!
