low carb/low cal diet

Question
i am on a no carb, low fat, high protein, less than 500 calories a day diet. is it possible to prevent muscle loss with weights and daily exercise on this type of diet? also, can you tell me how to find out what my actual bmi is? i used all the charts and formulas i could find and they all give me different answers. thank you for your time.

Answer
Dear Jen,

What you describe as your diet looks to me like protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF) however yours is even lower in calories. The standard protocol PSMF calls for ABOVE 600 Cal. The diet is designed for morbidly obese people, not for active bodybuilders, and its goal is to preserve protein in body's vital organs rather than the muscle of working out athletes.

It is advised against using this methods without supervision and for more than 3 months. As to skeletal muscle loss, you can be in danger of losing them in favor of other body's tissues like blood cells, heart muscle, lungs, immune system cells, etc.
