QuestionRecently I introduced Herbalife's Weight Reduction Program (ShapeWorks, i.e. F1 & F3) to my dear friend without realizing that he is having problem with Gout. Can he continues with the program?
AnswerAlthough each medical situation is different, people who have ever had an episode of gout should never, ever start a diet or change their eating patterns without seeing a doctor first. Diets high in protein can be very dangerous to people who suffer from gout; however, it is possible to replace some meat with soy protein without increasing total protein intake.
Even with his doctor's permission to start a diet, nutritional programs like Herbalife are not evaluated by the FDA, and often the products contain extra ingredients not listed on the labels (otherwise competitors could sell the same formula!). Some of the extra ingredients can be stimulants like caffeine, green tea extracts, or amphetamines, and can be dangerous to people with gout. Therefore, your friend should focus on eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, with only as much protein as recommended by his doctor. He should not use any kind of herbal supplement or shake.
Best of luck to both you and your friend!
