QuestionGeoff,
I've spent the last 9 months "detoxing" and have done the what seems to be standard beginners tests; such as fasting for various amounts of time, the lemonade diet, juicing, just veggies, just fruit etc etc etc. My symptoms included the lethargy, brain fog, numerous cavities, dermatitis on hands and feet, rosacea, etc etc. I lived on Mountain Dew and fast food (3-4 times a day) for about 10 years, but becasue I worked out I thought I'd be fine. not so... Anyway during the fasting I passed 9 strands of muciod plaque, rivaling what you would see on all those internet advertisements. I've been rebuilding over the last 2-3 months following the Weston Price school of thought, but not 100% raw.
My questions are basically this,
1. Regardless of what "diet" I'm following my facial rosacea is out of control. Did you have any "incurable" skin conditions that ceased with the Primal Diet?
2. I've tested myself 3-4 times during the last 9 months, the last being a piece of cracked, homemade wheat bread and the following morning everything inside me came out undigested, which is the norm each time I have any type of complex sugar. Is this an allergy or are my intestines no longer capable of handling anything but meat and fruit?
3. The last 2 months have been nothing more than raw eggs, avacado, cod or flounder, raw dairy and eskimo style or seared muscle meat from grass fed cattle. Occassional veg juice from juicer and not much else. However ocassionally I'll get the dermatitis bubbles on my fingers and my urine and breathe seem to be overly acidic (meat 4 times a day). Heartburn has been increasing as well. Do any other Primals complain of these symptoms from eating too much lightly cooked muscle meat, or is there more to it? AV's books are on their way and I've read all the others, Fallon, Price, Pottenget, Enig.
Any advice would be appreciated especially regarding the skin. I'm trying to avoid Photoderm, but the better my diet gets the more inflamed my face is becoming? Thanks
AnswerRe your questions:-
1) I had a couple of skin problems as a direct result of my dairy allergy. These skin conditions were only removed once I cut out the raw dairy from my diet. Rosacea is a symptom commonly linked to allergies.
2) Not sure. I noticed, as soon as I went raw that things like raw dairy or grain, which I later found I was allergic to, came out completely undigested. On the other hand, judging from reports from various Yahoo groups, it's been noted that people on rawpalaeo diets seem to gradually lose the ability over the years to handle non-raw and/or non-Palaeo foods over time, developing side-effects.
3) I might suggest two other authors, namely Stefansson's "Not by Bread Alone"(out of print) and any books by Loren Cordain. In my view, like with all the other authors, they have many flaws but they also, like the others, have a lot of interesting things to say.
As regards symptoms, the biggest problems rawpalaeodieters can face are in descending order re incidence:- raw dairy(due to allergies), grain products(same reason), veggie juice( due to antinutrients in veg becoming more bioavailable once juiced), eating far too large amounts every day of (raw) animal food especially the nutrient-poorer muscle-meats(and not eating enough nutrient-rich organ-meats(eg:- suet/marrow/tongue/kidney/liver/heart/brain etc.), raw eggs(due to allergies, and perhaps mainly due to unnatural grain component of chicken diets).
RPDers who only eat cooked food on occasion do tend to develop side-effects from eating cooked food, over time, as the body gradually becomes more efficient at detoxing poisons more quickly from the body. A number of RPDers also sometimes experience side-effects from eating grain-fed meat, so it's best to go for 100% grass-fed, organic meat instead, if at all possible.
Oh, and since your body appears to be highly acidic from years of cooked-food diets, I'd suggest eating a little raw, organic alkali fruit to compensate, for now.
Hope This Helps
Geoff
