Dear Jeff,

I am afraid, that you haven't given me any details on your diet or general health for me to go on! So the best I can do is give you a first impression:
It sounds like a classic case of hypoglycemia. This means the glucose levels in the blood drop too low and then the cells can't get their energy to work. This results in headaches and fatigue (usually after a "high" first - especially after sugary/simple carbohydrates, also the smallest bit of alcohol, or honey, for example; then promptly followed by a big drowsy "dip", possibly with a migrane or dizziness/nausea and general lethargy).
It could also be that your pancreas is not producing enough insulin, which could be the onset of Diabetes. Or you have a weak liver, which is unable to keep you blood "nice and fresh" (so you feel murky and foggy).
The liver, the great cleanser, takes up the excess glucose and waste. Either it is poorly (overtaxed, or some other disorder). The liver is a mighty strong and self-regenerating organ, but if you've done too much damage to it (too much fat or sugar or alcohol for too long e.g.) it starts to deteriorate and your system will become terribly sluggish. Eventually causing disease.
If it is only a question of poor diet, then much can be improved to see if you become fitter. But if this sleepiness has gradually got worse over many years (on an average healthy diet) you must see a doctor.
Hypoglycemia can be extremely well controlled with the right (nutritious and delicious) diet that is good for your entire health.  But make sure it's not the onset of diabetes. Diabetes can be a dangerous illness if left unchecked. Obviously you can find out more about this from your GP. Excessive thirst & passing of water and tiredness after eating are the first symptoms. If you are older, a smoker, a regular drinker or obese then these are added risk factors. Not all types of diabetes need insulin shots, sometimes diet alone or tablets can help you out.
The tricks of eating for energy can be very complex once you've spiralled into a pattern like you describe. And often require a rigorous clean up first (detox tea/liver herbs). But these details are more for the nutritionally expert and require extensive knowledge of diet, so you might like to think of consulting a dietician.
I wish you all the best, and try to have it medically checked out (simple blooddrop-test by GP can tell you a lot) just so you know where you stand, first.
Take care,
Evelyn.

Answer
Hi again Jeff! Sorry to have kept you waiting so long (had a little break).Bloodsugar level imbalances are not caused by unfitness but can explain unfitness. Indeed, though, activity often can remedy lethargy or apathy, when strfingent discipline is applied. Mind over matter can really work sometimes. However, if you have a constitutional malfunction you really need to have that diagnosed and tackled first.
Your symptom can also indicate a hormone imbalance.Or an immune system deficiency (even a chronic disease in that field like Pfeiffer) - although you'ld wake up in the morning feeling unfit aswell as after eating. But in any case, if fatigue and eating are so directly and emphatically linked, for an extended period of time, at least, you must consider how much sugar and simple carbohydrates your diet includes (and reduce them dramatically or cut them out) and also weigh off calorie intake and exercise. Stress, emotional exhaustion and nervous conditions can also make one unfit in the long run.
If you hang around all day, then eat and then feel heavy in your head you need to simply kick yourself into a better shape (more activity, less loafing!). But if that's not it, or you feel overall depressed, I suggest you see your GP.
Good luck with "lightening up" soon!
Greetings Evelyn.
