Questionhow much fish should a man/a woman/ achild should eat?
AnswerDear Prasanthkdharman,
It all depends; there is no real "should" about fish. One can't really over-eat on fish (like is common in the West with meat) but for both the fishes' sake and your own moderation, 200 grams (fileted) for an average male adult is a large portion and plenty to keep you going on proteins for the day. I have found once a week, in an otherwise predominantly vegetarian diet is sufficient for a healthy person, if they so desire a varied diet with some animal protein. A child under seven needs only a snippet here and there (oily fish contains useful omega acids, possibly helpful in reducing asthma attacks, but not canned/processed. But until the teenage years proteins are not top priority). Conventional Science believes fish is good for brain development. According to my type of diet (Anthroposophical) under fives do not need the type of protein fish supplies, and it would only serve as a luxury/treat/or expansion of tastebud experiences. Older people also need fewer proteins, and therefore tend to prefer a smaller piece of (white/flaky rather than steaky) fish. Some reports suggest fish oil is recommended for the elderly to reduce risks of cardiovascular disease.
Above all, try to eat unpolluted fish (fish very easily reflect poor environmental conditions - heavy metals in the seas, for example, which you inevitably ingest along with the flesh). And try to consume fish which has been fished with respect for larger environmental concerns (overfishing and is a big problem for the overall ecosystem world wide, but also fish farming can be damaging to both human health and the natural balance and condition of fish in general).
Just remember to go easy on the chips and enjoy your fish in peace and harmony,
all the best,
Evelyn.
