QuestionYou wrote in one response about fats that saturated fats come from animal sources. What about nuts? They have saturated fats, is that fat just as bad for you as an animals saturated fat? Coconut oil has a high amount of saturated fat, shouldnt we avoid eating it? Nuts such as walnuts and almonds have saturated fats (about 1.5g in .25 cups) but they are considered healthy to eat in moderation bc of the effect they have on LDL cholesterol levels....but if someone were to eat a diet rich in nuts, wouldnt they eventually have heart or artery problems? That saturated fat has to go somewhere! Im a little confused..
AnswerLauren,
Most animal fats have higher levels of saturated fats than most vegetable sources. A quarter cup of walnuts may have 1.8 grams of saturated fat, but it also has 2.6 grams of heart-healthy omega 3's... but a quarter cup of butter sauce has 29 grams of saturated fat and no omega-3's. If a person eats 2,000 calories per day, then they should not eat more than 22 grams of saturated fat daily-you would have to eat a lot of nuts to get to 22 grams of saturated fat.
In most of my answers, I try to give people general principles that will lead them to make healthier choices most of the time-it takes time to learn the ins and outs of healthy eating, and most people who ask me questions on this forum are trying to figure out how to get started-so if you know a lot about nutrition, probably most of my answers will seem a bit simplistic. Of course, if people want more detailed or specific information, I always welcome followup questions.
