QuestionAre there any nutritional #'s I should be aware of on the SBD? I always look to see the ammount of carbs & sugar in products but the book doesn't give any information regarding how much is too much- carbs and sugar...and any other information you may know of.
AnswerSouth Beach rules are tricky and it takes some time to get used to them.
To get a quick idea of whether a carb is SB friendly, try this:
For every 10 grams of carbs in the food, there must be at least 2 fiber. So if a slice of bread has 25 carbs and 4 fiber, then don't eat it-find one with fewer carbs or more fiber.
Sugar: ignore the nutrition label and look for the ingredients list. If sugar or corn syrup are ingredients, don't eat it. Molasses, honey, and natural fruit juice, and low-calorie sweeteners are OK.
This isn't really much extra work, because you calculate the necessary fiber just like you would a 20% restaurant tip, and you were already going to read the ingredients to make sure there was absolutely no hydrogenated anything-right? :)
