healing ms and starting the diet

Question
Do you know of anyone that healed multiple sclerosis on a raw paleo diet? While on the diet should I omitt all celtic sea salt?? What are your feelings on raw honey? AV says to indulge in it and it will heal my nerves/ How do you feel? Is it ok to have one fruit meal a day? What about drinking water? How should I approach this? I adopted this diet because AV said multiple sclerosis can never be healed on my former vegan diet....how do yo feel on this statement??

Answer
I do not personally know of any person who's been cured of MS on this diet. Bear in mind, though, that I live in the UK, and most rawpalaeodieters are based in the US - I only personally know some European RAFers and one or two American visitors. If you're US-based, your best bet would be  for you to attend various Primal-Potlucks so you can ask people directly re this issue. To find out about locations of such Potlucks, you could e-mail Aajonus at [email protected] for details. Also Aajonus, does claim to have a whole list of testimonials from people re recovery on his diet, so you might ask him re this.

You could also ask around for MS-recovery testimonials on these Yahoo diet groups - these groups are also invaluable for finding info on how to get used to eating raw meats, how to get started etc.):-

Re cletic sea-salt:- Use of salt is not recommended. Salt-consumption is  a Weston-Price notion but humans in Palaeolithic times never bothered to use  rock-salt or sea-salt in their diets(besides there are natural salts in meats, anyway). I would suggest that if you have any high blood-pressure, to avoid salt completely. It would be  much better to use pepper, garlic etc. to season your meats, instead. Once your symptoms start improving, it may be OK to use one pinch of salt once or twice a week, but that should be it, really.

Re Raw honey:- Honey, even raw, can really spike blood-sugar-levels. Many RPDers report problems with the huge amounts of raw honey that Aajonus typically recommends, and it's quite common for people to develop a slight intolerance to high amounts of raw carbs like honey, after being  rawpalaeo for a couple of years, or more. I would suggest trying smaller amounts( no more than a 6-8 ounce-weight tub of honey a day, at the most. In my own case, I got instant blood-sugar problems with raw, liquid honey, but had no problems with raw heather honeycomb- so you might try honeycomb as an option, if you don't take to the honey.

Re fruit-meal:- It's generally a good idea to separate different food-groups from each other by half-an-hour or more, especially if your digestive system is in a bad way. This is because, the body uses different digestive PHs for fruti/veg and for animal-food.

I'm not as dead-set against fruit as AV, generally. I think it can be useful in moderate amounts. But fruit-consumption  above 20% of the diet is definitely not a good idea.

Re drinking-water:- My recommendation would be high-alkaline mineral-water-bottles  from natural mountain springs(with a PH value on the label of 7.4 or higher - I really like a PH value of 8.4, but can't always get it). Anyway, the high-alkaline mineral-water  is most similiar to the mineral-rich water found in (non-polluted!) rivers and lakes.

A lot of people suggest using distilled water, because of the worry re fluoride/chlorine in tapwater. The trouble is that distilled water leaches minerals from the body and can cause real harm, long-term. Here's the most definitive review of the harmful effects of long-term consumption of distilled-water:-

Tap-water isn't always bad. If the tapwater comes direct from a mountain-spring, without any processing,  then you're basically getting mineral-water from the tap. I have  experienced this in the Austrian skiing village I visit annually, for example. Obviously, any tapwater in the big cities is bound to be full of various chemicals, so is to be avoided.

Re vegan diets/AV etc:- It's true that vegan diets are more effective than cooked-animal-food diets at reducing the inflmmation and other symptoms relevant to MS and related auto-immune disorders. However, vegan diets are deficient in several nutrients(most notably vitamin A(plant-derived  beta-carotene doesn't count as an alternative) and vitamin B12), and are not good for regeneration, so, in the long-term, conditions would worsen on such a diet.

While cooked-animal-foods(especially heavily-cooked) are definitely the worst as regards causing inflammation,  raw animal-foods are definitely healing/rebuilding. I would add a note of caution, though. It's been noted by many scientists that dairy and grains seriously aggravate the symptoms of auto-immune diseases like MS. Despite AV's claims re raw-dairy being healthy, raw-dairy allergies and/or side-effects turn out to be  extremely common among rawpalaeodieters( due to imbalanced nutrient-levels  found in milk, the hormone-content etc. etc.), so I would strongly recommend avoiding consumption of raw dairy products.
