Question
QUESTION: Hi there,
I've been following a predominately raw paleo diet for some time now, I was
eating my meat with salads but i was getting bloated and having stomach
distress  so i took the fibre out and since then my tummy has been much
better.
i'm not doing any dairy or grains and most of my diet is made up of
avocados, raw meat, fish, alittle saurkraut, the odd tomato here and there.
I was a raw vegan for 6 years and became very ill from it and then started a
low carb candida diet that's emphasis was on fats and protein . I feel alot
better but still get the odd blaot, i noticed that cooked veg digested better for
me than raw.
Since changing my diet over I have gained 2 stone in weight. and since
becoming raw paleo i have gained an extra 7 pounds.
I feel my ideal weight for my height to be around 140 lbs on my 5,7 frame i'm
female by the way but i'm now passing 152 and sem to be gaining every day.
my only naughty is 100% cacao bar with no sugar,
and coconut milk i use in herbal tea.
i have cacao about once a month .
i've recently stopped using salt.
any suggestions here at what might be going on. I'm busting out of my
clothes
thanks
pipxx

ANSWER: Yes, it's quite common for people with previously-wrecked digestive-systems to experience a few side-effects when combining raw-meats and raw fruit/raw veg at the same meal. It's better, at first, to follow the practice of food-combining and leave at least half-an-hour between eating any raw plant-food and any raw animal-food.

(When I first started on this diet, years ago, I, personally,  needed to be a little more extreme, as my stomach was extremely sensitive at the time, so I went in, temporarily,  for the Instincto habit of mono-eating(ie eating only one food at a time, leaving c.30 minutes between eating any different foods).

Re weight-gain:- Well, the usual recommended way to lose  weight is to cut down on the  carbs, but your diet, from your own description, seems to be already rather low in carbs, as you mention only avocaodes and a little tomato, here and there .All I can suggest is that you tinker with the ratios of proteins/fats/carbs in general, raising/lowering them until you find a helpful medium.

Other than that, I should mention that there is a common tendency for people new to this diet(such as myself, when I first started) to assume that, if raw-animal-food makes them healthy, that the more they eat of it at each meal the quicker they'll speed up the rate of their health-recovery. This isn't necessarily the case, as the body can get overloaded at times, especially if it has to spend its resources on constant digestion, and since raw-food has a higher level of nutrients, gram for gram,  than cooked-food, one's body tends to actually need less of it per day, than in pre-raw days - unfortunately, a lot of people naturally assume that they need the same amounts of food as they did in pre-raw days.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that you take up Intermittent Fasting, like myself, as that is perhaps an extreme, but you might want to experiment with just having two main meals a day, just to see if that works. The worst thing to do would be to eat lots of small, frequent meals throughout the day, as that would likely slow down the rate of healing.

QUESTION: Thanks Geoff
I have been eating 3 meals a day although my breakfast was a small meal usually containing 2 raw egg yolks and a few tablespoons of coconut oil with a sprinkle of nutritional yeast for b vits. (  not exactly paleo )
over the past few days i have prefered to drink herbal teas during the morning as the eggs/coco fats were making me nauseaous.
I am eating around 1/2 an avocado with 1/2 lb of meat, normally, buffulo or beef ribeye. or minced lamb ( all grass feed organic) or raw fish, tuna, wild salmon, king prawns, dolphin fish, moonfish plus 1-2 tablespoons o saurkraut and a chopped tomato
I pretty much have the same type of meal in the evening apart from substituting coconut oil for the avo,
Every so often i am able to get hold of organic liver.
As I am living in Hawaii although british by birth, It is hard to get hold of the organ meats you recommened. There is one store that sells korean foods whih might carry this stuff but not organic.
I sometimes get worried that I'm not getting enough calories after starving myself for so many years on a raw vegan diet.
So i will get back onto 2 meals a day.
Any other suggestions here or how i might get more variety would also help and whether or not i'm eating too muh musle meats and whether raw organ meats that are non organic are ok.

Answer
Well, Aajonus claims that toxins from unhealthy animals are concentrated in the organ-meats, so I generally don't touch nonorganic organ-meats(with the exception of marrow) if I have no access to high-quality varieties. On the other hand, there have been claims by a few  people that they have recovered their health on raw, intensively-farmed, nonorganic meats/organ-meats(though I would imagine health-recovery would take longer).

For non-US residents, I usually recommmend searching for any available local farmers' markets. The meat-stalls at these markets rarely display the organ-meats as they don't generally sell well, but if you get the farm's business-card you can phone them up to get them to bring an order of organ-meats to the stall when the market is next open. Here in the UK, there are some great series of farmers' markets, such as the (semi-organic) London Farmer's Markets Association - unfortunately, the US ones apparently usually only sell fruit and veg, which is often not organic, and the markets are generally only held seasonally. This is no doubt because the larger producers have wiped out the smaller farmers and retailers.

If there are no suitable farmers' markets, you could check various online grass-fed meat directories. www.eatwild.com is an excellent site. Checking it reveals at least one Hawaii farm which sells organic, grass-fed meat. There are also other companies(US Wellness Meats/Slanker's etc. etc.) which ship between states, but given the distance between Hawaii and other US states, this might pose a problem(unlss you just want suet, which tends to last afor ages before deteriorating)!

There's also another option. There is a Primal-Diet community called "Pangaia" which is based somewhere on Hawaii, and they should know a lot more re local sources of organ-meats etc. They have their own website here:-

http://www.pangaia.cc/index.html

http://www.pangaia.cc/raw.html

It's probably best if you e-mail the person below, as to where to get hold of organ-meats etc.:-

[email protected]

In the mean-time, until you find a source of organ-meats, it might be an idea to get hold of various kinds of raw shellfish as they are very high in the some of the nutrients found in organ-meats.

Hope This Helps,
