QuestionQUESTION: My 40 year old friend has Juvenile Diabetes and has gone into renal failure. I saw that you include starches (rice, pastas) on the low potassium diet, but her diabetic diet calls for a restriction of carbs. Is there a right or wrong approach to this? Also, what types of protein are best for her condition? Thank you so much! Lynn, Fairfax Station, VA.
ANSWER: Dear Lynn,
The list your refer to is for patients requiring low potassium foods, it doesn't exclude foods that are contraindicated for diabetic patient. The best you can do, I think, is asking for a help of professional dietitian specializing in you friend's particular combination of requirements. Until you do that, try eliminating starches out of the list.
As to the protein types and sources, it doesn't seem matter too much if one avoids animal FATS, in red meats especially. However again, talk to the doctor!
I wish your friend the very best luck!

QUESTION: Can you recommend an Internet specialist in diabetic/renal failure diets? Her Doctors just give her poorly xeroxed copies of general separate guidelines and I am trying to put together some recipes and menus that may actually be of some practical use to her (and perhaps others.) Thank you for your rapid response to my previous question. Lynn in Fairfax Station, VA.
