QuestionTanya
I have been trying to find info on this, and was hoping you might know something.
I have had abdominal distension, gas, and poor digestion for the past few years(I am 49 now).
Could never understand why as I eat light and healthy,no booze, junk,
A few nights ago I had extreme abdominal distress after a late night bowl of ice cream.
I eat as much dairy as the average person but I did eat a lot more fancy cheese over xmas, and I like lots of milk in my coffee (de caf) and tea (chai).
I wonder if I have a dairy allergy?
I had a recent check up so I dont feel like going back to the doctor.
Its only been a few days with no dairy but I feel a bit less bloated.
How long will it take to notice any benefits if I go dairy free,if I am in fact allwergic?
Also, can I take any supplements that could help?
AnswerHello Bud,
Your symptoms can mean lactose intolerance, milk allergy, or carbohydrate overconsuming (bowl of ice cream).
To figure it out without going to your doctor, try this method:
1. Remove any diary foods and wait for one week
2. Next week, introduce one diary food and wait again
3. Continue introducing foods until you find what causes the bloating
Keep it in your mind that lactose can be hidden in the following foods:
bread and other baked goods
processed breakfast cereals
instant potatoes, soups, and breakfast drinks
margarine
lunch meats (other than kosher)
salad dressings
candies and other snacks
mixes for pancakes, biscuits, and cookies
powdered meal-replacement supplements
4. If you fail finding the food to blame, try reducing carbohydrates in your diet.
Hope it can help,
