QuestionLow potassium foods allow 1-2 cup.I cant find a diet for a grown man.Aso what can I order when I eat out?
AnswerDear Robert,
You have not given me sufficient information for me to answer you question properly. It is also not exact enough to state that low potassium foods are per se are dosed per cup (somtimes half is already the limit); it depends very much on the product.
I need to know the amount of potassium you are allowed, and the kind of food you generally eat (meat/veg/grains?), and I presume your reason for asking is medical, which then surprises me that you have not been referred to a nutritionist (by your specialist). Since I don't know the medical reason you are on a low potassium diet, it is hard to advise you. Should it be that you are a kidney patient I reccommend you check out the National Kidney Foundation site. This will tell you what foods are low in potassium. However, I grant you that will not make decisions on what to order from the menu any easier for you, or how to compile a healthy meal on a daily basis. If you think I could help you any more with more details at my disposition, then please contact me again.
I think there has to be a way for you to find a fully nourishing and satisfying meal, but it is tricky, with potassium basically in everything healthy! Last tip: stay away from preservatives - canned stuff - and boil veg in lots of water,(even soak potatoes for about two hours in warm water first), then drain, rinse to try and leach some of the potassium out of them. And alas, avoid bran and wholemeal products....although brown rice is low in potassium and white bread, too.
If you can try to find a dietician who can go through each meal with you in detail, with all the options available.
For now take care and enjoy the little you can
Evelyn.
