QuestionI currently eat fresh, 100% grass fed liver, kidney, heart and tongue from various animals. However, I have been wanting to try oxtail, tripe, cheek, and rocky mountain oysters from my beef vendor.
Are these offal as nutritionally beneficial as the other offal I'm currently eating? Are there any that I should avoid eating?
Regards,
Michel
AnswerI don't think you need to worry. Technically speaking, it's a good idea to eat from all parts of the animal, just like our Palaeo ancestors did - I used to be happy with just the usual organs(ie raw heart/liver/kidney./tongue), but am now looking for more unusual organs like raw adrenals or the raw fat behind the eyeballs, as well.. I will admit to being squeamish and to avoid a couple organs like raw lung(takes gaes to chew and is tasteless) ,raw intestines, and "rocky mountain oysters"(I once had a dish of cooked-intestines, pre-raw diet, which tasted so foul, that I've never had the nerve to make a special order for raw intestines from my farmers - and though I've, on occasion, been given stag-testicles as an extra to my food-order, I could never bring myself to eat it as it seemed to be too tough for my teeth). But there are plenty of RAFers/RPDers who like eating parts from the whole animal, and who report not having the same issues I had with those particular innards, so feel free to experiment.
