thank you for advising me.
AnswerInteresting question Carol.
Well the best answer I can give you is possibly. I am not a physician so I cannot answer this question for sure, all I can do is tell you some of the side effects, and concerns regarding these types of "supplements".
Now the jury is still out on many of these "herbal remedies". The big concern with many of them is that you really don't know what all is in them. There have also been studies that have found some of them to contain such chemicals as arsenic, lead, and even fecal coliform (that is the bacteria most commonly found in human excrement!). There are several ways that these contaminants could find there way into your supplements.
The most common is simply sub-par sanitation. For example, if one of the workers on their production line doesn't properly wash their hands after using the restroom the whole batch could become contaminated. Another common way that they can become contaminated is by using contaminated water to quench the plants that are used for ingredients and fillers. This is the same way that the green onions, spinach, and raspberries were contaminated a few years ago.
The arsenic found in some of the "herbal supplements" is really simple to explain. Arsenic is found in apple seeds, if the seeds are not removed its not hard to figure out how it got in there. Another disturbing thing about the ingredients commonly found in the "herbal supplements" is that without proper inspection and handling many hazardous contaminants can get into them. Simple fruits, vegetables and other ingredients can cause some pretty nasty things to get into them for example riacin. Which can cause a slow excruciating death with no cure. Also mold is a common problem, some molds are beneficial and found in medicines such as penicillin. However many common molds use poisons called mitotoxins as a defense mechanism.
Personally I try to steer clear of these "supplements" I simply increase the vegetable, fruit, grain, and protein in my diet. I do still take a daily multi-vitamin though, I like GNC Mega Men's Gold without iron. I also take fish oil, and vitamin C. I trust GNC more than many of the other manufacturers because they actually go the extra mile and hire an outside company to do random quality control testing. The reason that many so called beneficial supplements get by with putting low quality or hazardous ingredients into their products is because the companies are not policed by a government agency. Thus the reason that many of them have the disclaimer "These statements/products have not been evaluated by the FDA" printed right on the label, generally in small print.
I hope that this information has helped to shine some light on the mysterious world of "herbal supplements for you. If there is any other questions that I can assist you with all you need do is ask and I will answer them to the best of my knowledge! I also can help with recipes and diet planning if you need any help in those departments I have hundreds recipes I have written myself that are at your disposal! GOOD LUCK and HAPPY EATING!
