QuestionHello, My dad has diabetes and is already on a diabetic diet, well on monday he had a hearattack and they determined that within the past few weeks he has had others. They told him at the hospital that a nutrionist would come in and give him the low down on what he can now eat/ not eat. well no one did. Since he now has two diets, a diabetic and a cardiac, what do we do? Some things that are on the hear diet are not allowed on the diabetic and vice versa. Could you provide me with some information on where to find a combined diet? Also he was wondering if he would be able to eat pickled eggs and pickled cauliflower and if so how much? Thank you for your time and you knowledge.
AnswerTrisha,
A diet that would comply with both diabetic and cardiac diet rules and limitations should be low in total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium (anything pickled doesn't seem right), cholesterol, sugar, sweets, and white flour products.
The recommended amount are estimated as the following:
Grains and starches 6-11 servings (read about servings:
http://atkinszone.com/faq/2008/11/what-is-fruit-serving-size.html )
Vegetables 3-5 servings
Fruits 2-3 servings
Dairy 2-3 servings
Meats 2-3 servings
Fats and sweets "use sparingly"
Allowed are:
Skinless chicken
Skinless turkey
Trimmed pork
Lean lam
Lean beef
Egg whites, omega-3 whole eggs
Fish
Shellfish
Low fat diary
Fresh fruits
Raw and cooked vegetables
Good fats (olive and tree nut oils, avocados, olives, seeds, nuts, omega-3, transfat-free spreads)
