QuestionHi Melissa,
I am 19, 5ft 3 and my weight fluctuates between 9 and 10 stone. Desire to
lose weight has clouded everything in the past 3 years of my life, and I have
finally come to my senses, and have decided that I want to take a year to
reach my goal weight for my height which is 7.5- 8 stone.
I have started eating like a caveman, but have read so many conflicting things
about fruit. Seeing as fruit is not recommended for people with yeast
overgrowth/ diabetes/ obesity; it seems to me it might just be a bonus not to
eat it anyway. I am eating lots of vegetables particularly spinach, cabbage,
carrots. And I tend to eat tinned fish.
Is a diet that consists wholly of non starchy veg (and carrots) fish and berries
sustainable?
I find that nuts lead me into the same trap as carbs- OVEREATING. I can't do
moderation which is why this diet is so good (the foods cannot just be picked
up and scoffed, they must be prepared..and I rarely feel like scoffing a fish)
So do you think that it is ok to go on this diet? I have real trouble with
knowing what to eat for breakfast as well- this morning I had onion and
spinach cooked in water. It doesn't seem as wholesome as a big bowl of
yoghurt and museli!
Do you think that quantity is important? I have always eaten very healthily-
even when i ate carbs (brown rice, oatcakes) but i just eat a trememdous
amount, which I think is why I remain large, do you think if I overeat carrots
and nuts and fruits (if i do keep these in my diet) that i will not lose weight.
I truly have tried portion control but i just chain eat so badly. I get quite a lot
of exercise from walking round the city, and I go running when i go to the
countryside, and do some sit ups and squats occasionally.
nothing shifts my extra stone and a half
I hope you can extract my questions from this ramble-
Many thanks Nina.
AnswerNina-
First and foremost, 9 stone is your ideal weight for your height. I'm concerned about why you believe that you're overweight. If you think about your weight on most days of the week, then you would benefit from talking about your worries with your GP.
Second, just as a point of interest-A diet that consists of non starchy veggies, carrots (which are very starchy), fish, and berries, may or may not be sustainable depending on what type of fish you're eating. You can live on zero carbs, but protein and fat are required. All fish provides plenty of protein, but low-fat fish may not provide enough essential fatty acids. As long as your fish is an oily, coldwater fish (like salmon) then that diet can easily provide all essential nutrients.
Third, quantity of food is important. And you are already eating more or less correct quantities-if you were really overeating, then you would be overweight-so relax and enjoy your food.
