Becoming a Vegan

Question
I want to become a vegan to lose weight will it work? I weigh 330 lbs. and I'm a meat eater and what will happen if i cut meat will i see results? I also plan on cutting some dairy products.

Answer
Dear Katie,

A veganistic diet contains no dairy whatsoever. Neither can you eat eggs, or any products containing them, or butter, or milk, let alone meat and fish. Even honey robs the animal of its own foodsource, and cannot be consumed by a serious vegan. People only really become vegan for varying philosophical reasons, since there are, otherwise, health risks involved  with this diet for the average (especially Westernised) individual. A vit.B12 deficiency would not be one of your least concerns. The consequences of such a deficiency, in most people, can be irreversably damaging.

To cut a long story short: you would not have a lot of food left to choose from. But if you think this is the right way to lose weight you are sadly mistaken. What will happen is that you will still be "thinking on an old diet" and a sense of deprivation will make you miserable. However ironic it may sound, only happy (balanced) people lose weight.

So no external drastic measures, or harsh regimes will help you much, in the long run. The clue is a change of attitude and understanding. It will really have to start with a clear insight into yourself and realistic goals. Excess baggage (weight) always points to matters of the heart and soul which need to be dealt with. A diet can be a fantastic tool to help you address repression and set up new discipline. Healthy food is healing in that it inspires your life-force. What you eat (inspired by how you eat, prepare and chose your meals) will bring you new energy, open new channels for new ideals and set in motion what has now become stagnant (fat).

Considering your medical condition of obesitas, you first and foremost need to seek medical advice before commencing with any diet. Make sure there are not pathologies underlying the weight gain. I, also, think you would benefit greatly from a nutritional and life-style coach who can support you along the way and give sensible advice tailored specifically to your personal needs.

If you wish to run any further thoughts on overhauling your current diet by me, do not hesitate to do so.
Take care,
Evelyn
