QuestionSarah
I have been eating low glycemic-low calorie and running for a year now and havent lost a pound.
A few weeks ago to my husband was told by his doctor to cut out red meats and dietary fat because his blood pressure was skyroceting.
So, I stocked the house with carbs and chicen and fish and gave away the red meat.
Surprise- he is lowering his blood pressure and now I am finally losing weight! Whats up with that?
Eveything on the net says the opposite-dont eat carbs.
For me however its the opposite.
I find in fact that my appetite is lower now that I eat more pasta, breads, rice with no red meat just a little chicken.
One day I at lunch with a friend I had a burger and for the rest of the day was craving meat!
I think this whole low carb thing is a load of BS.
In other countries people live on a high carb diet-rice in the orient, pasta in Italy, etc. Just a little meat chopped up for flavoring. Those people are skinny-I have been there.
Its us T bone steak pork chop eating westerners that are fat!
Any thoughts appreciated!
AnswerIt sounds to me as if your metabolism was acting in starvation mode. If you were eating too low of a calorie diet and running, you may have unknowingly been causing your body to burn fewer calories. It抯 hard for many people who want to lose weight to accept that food really is fuel and your body needs plenty to keep working efficiently, even when you are trying to lose weight! The same idea applies to the carbohydrates. Your body may not have been receiving enough to completely replenish your glycogen stores (carbs stored in the liver and muscles), which would be important as a runner, and could have caused your body to go into starvation mode. If it was the lack of carbohydrates causing your body to save calories, then it would make sense you are losing weight now that you are eating them卆nd maybe you are even eating fewer calories since red meat is higher in calories than the chicken you have now replaced it with.
There are many theories why low-carbohydrate diets work for some people. They work for most people initially because they are losing glycogen stores. Water weight is also lost because the body uses water to process proteins. Yes, even some of that initial weight is the body burning fat for fuel. There is now some speculation people successful long-term with low-carb diets may actually have low-grade allergies to wheat. There are also some medical professionals who believe Celiac disease (which causes an autoimmune response to gluten) is under diagnosed; many patients who discover they have wheat allergies or Celiac disease and stop consuming the offending foods find they lose weight.
As for your craving meat after eating a burger, there may be several reasons. Many women crave red meat around 搕hat time of the month;?red meat is higher in heme iron (the type of iron most easily absorbed by the body) than other sources, which may explain that type of craving. However, if you just ate the meat and started craving more it seems more like it began for psychological reasons. Sometimes when a food is eaten that was enjoyed in the past the body will release the 揻eel good?hormone serotonin, which could cause a craving to consume more to continue the release of the hormone. The craving may also just be because people often crave something if they feel deprived or that the food is 揵ad?and they have to stay away from it.
If you are counting calories, please remember as you lose weight you should recalculate your body抯 needs卆s you lose weight, your body will need less to maintain that weight. Many people forget to recalculate and reach a plateau.
Good luck to both you and your husband in your quest for better health!
