QuestionHi, I just received some raw glands from grassfed cattle. I am new to eating raw
land animals, any suggestions for preparing these organs so they are more
palatable? Can I mix them with say tomatoes in a blender and drink it down like
a smoothie? Can I soak them in Kimchi juice? Any ideas would be appreciated.
AnswerI'm not sure what to suggest. Like the majority of long-term RPDers, I generally only very rarely use extra raw spices etc. and just eat the raw foods on their own, and I'm only able to get hold of freeze-dried (grassfed) adrenal/thyroid in supplement form which I find quite palatable on their own. I do eat raw thymus(on its own) occasionally, which I still find rather bland, but my tactic is to mix it up with meats like raw ox tongue which I very much like, thus disguising the blandness of the sweetbreads(other name for thymus/pancreas).
But, yes, mixing in a blender with tomato juice or soaking in kimchi juice etc. sounds well worth trying, especially since many newbies use blenders for this purpose. You might want to ask about this on the various other raw animal food forums out there(rawpaleodiet yahoo group, rawpaleoforum etc.) as many people new to such diets mention numerous different recipes they use to get used to the stuff. Or you could look up the various 1000s of cooked recipes out there on the net, and just substitute any cooked ingredients for the raw equivalent(eg:- replace any vinegar with raw apple-cider vinegar etc.)
Another way, people use is to start off cooking every food, if only lightly, add any sauces(however processed) to the raw meats. Then, gradually, over a period of time, they start reducing the cooking temperature by 1 degree celsius every so often(and replacing processed sauces with raw ones), until , eventually, they are completely used to eating raw meats at room-temperature. Then, after a while, you likely won't feel the need for the raw spices any more and can eat the raw meats/glands on their own.
