QuestionSarah
I am male, 50.
I have been trying to reduce my prominant belly to no avail.
I have tried elimination diets, enzymes, probiotics, etc.
BTW I dont carry a lot of fat so I am not obese, and I get lots of exercise.
I have noticed that whenever I eat beef, especially ground beef, I get really bloated. This also happens with ice cream
Pork, chicken and cheese are not a problem.
Could this have something to do with the hormones fed to beef cattle?
A few years ago I worked in the meat department of a store. I saw so much ground beef I quit eating it-and lost the belly.
Maybe I am susceptible to beef or something in it?
Thanks for any thoughts!
AnswerSome people complain beef causes them bloating. I haven't seen any research which suggests it should, since bloating is most often caused by gas which is caused as a by-product of carboydrate digestion. However, I also believe that, even if all scientific research proves otherwise, if a lot of people have the same complaint they shouldn't be ignored and you are not the first person I have had with this complaint about beef. Scientific research done in the past is later discredited all the time and, honestly, there is so much about nutrition we do not yet understand. I have read articles suggesting hormones in cattle contribute to overall obesity but I have not seen anything specifically with stomach fat. If you find eliminating beef and ice cream eliminates your bloating, I would recommend staying away from beef and ice cream. I cannot tell you from a scientific standpoint why it is causing the bloating or contributing to stomach fat, but if it works for you then it works for you no matter how many scientist or nutritionist tell you beef shouldn't affect bloating. Good luck!
