QuestionHi...i recently had a few tests for food sensitivity.I only did 4 tests for wheat corn eggs and milk.i came back highly sensitive to all especially eggs.My question is if i am sensitive to eggs should i also avoid chicken?i also am allergic to feathers?thank you
AnswerFood allergies are usually an allergy to one or more specific proteins contained in the food. Eggs contain many proteins, including: ovalbumin, ovotransferrin, ovoglobulins G2 and G3, ovomucin, lysozyme, ovoinhibitor, ovoglycoprotein, flavoprotein, ovomacroglobulin, avidin, cystatin, and serum albumin. The bioavailability (how much protein you actually absorb) from eggs is roughly 94%. You do not necessarily need to avoid chicken because most of the protein in chicken is different. However, if you are specifically allergic to the serum albumin (aka: alpha-livetin) you may react to chicken also because it is present in both eggs and chicken. However, bioavailability of protein from chicken is only about 68%, so even if you consume the same amount of serum albumin from chicken as from egg you wouldn't have as much of a reaction because you would not be absorbing as much. People react to feathers for different reasons, but the most common reasons are allergies to dust mites or animal dander (which accumulated in the shaft of the feather when it was on the bird and is released into the air as the shaft disinegrates); true allergies to the feathers themselves are much rarer.
Just so you know, some seasonings and flavorings contain egg proteins, so if you notice reactions to processed foods you do not think you should be allergic to, read the food label carefully and call the company if necessary. They are required to provide allergy information if asked. I am sure you have also been told many vaccines are created using eggs, so you should always let you health care provider know about the egg allergy prior to taking any shots and medications.
You seem to have allergies to some very common foods and I really feel for you. Corn and egg will be the hardest to avoid if you must (thanks to sweetness of high fructose corn syrup and the binding power of eggs, which make both common ingredients), but all the deligence will be worth it if you begin feeling better. I wish you the best of luck. Please contact me again if you have any further questions.
