QuestionHi Tanya and Happy New Year to you!
I am a guy in his early fifties.
I seem to have developed some food allergies over the years,
My doctor is a bit doubtfull but if not consuming these foods helps he says go for it.
Problem is I can find no information to back up my suspicions!
Can you help?
Number 1.Red Meat. I get gassy and bloated even if I eat a little beef or pork. Chicken, fish, is OK.
Number 2. (This REALLY BUGS ME!)Beer with hops. My wife actually diagnosed this a few years ago. I am not a big drinker but I like a couple beers every now and then. However I get bloated, sinuses get plugged,a few more. This doesnt happen with wine or spirits. I cant finf any info on beer that doesnt contain hops.
Can you help here?
One thing these have in common is that they are both estrogen related. Red meat is full of growth hormones (estrogen) and hops are also estrogenic. So are my symptoms-bloating, irritability.
Thanks so much for any help here!
AnswerTerry, Good for you to notice the estrogen thing. But did you know that there can be allergy to estrogen itself? Talk to your doctor about this. On the practical note, what you can do is:
1. Watch the debate about US ban on hormone use in cattle, maybe it finally happens in the USA though the real reason for this movement is the ability to export meats to Europe, where this ban exists already for a long time. Or, find meats with certified "no hormones administered" label (I suspect they are not cheap)-
2. Think about brewing beer at home. Check the enthusiasts' website http://beermakers.tribe.net - they share the hops-less recipes
3. Protect yourself fro those estrogens with cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, fermented (not pickled) or raw. However, to get the active substance in needed amounts, it takes eating too much os them. Alternatively, take the supplement, DIM (di-indollyl methane). DIM, which blocks the production of the toxic estrogens and enhance the production of the beneficial forms. (http://tinyurl.com/anti-estrogen)
